Saying No Without Writing an Essay

A kind no can be short. Long explanations often make it harder for everyone.

Many of us turn a simple no into a small legal defense, with three reasons, an apology and an offer to make it up later. By the time we've finished, we've spent more energy declining the thing than it would have taken to do it.

A clear, kind no is usually short, and it tends to be easier on the other person too. They get an answer and can move on.

Give yourself time to answer

Much of our over-committing happens in the moment, because a request arrives and the yes comes out before we have thought about it. You're allowed to pause. Try "Let me check and get back to you tomorrow." Then actually consider it, and actually get back to them.

A useful question to ask yourself: if this were happening this Saturday rather than in two months, would I want to do it? Faraway commitments always seem to cost less than they do.

Some sentences to borrow

  • "Thank you for thinking of me, but I can't make it."
  • "That doesn't work for me right now."
  • "I'm not able to take this on. I hope it goes well."
  • "I can't do the whole thing, but I could help for an hour on Tuesday." (Only if you truly want to.)

Notice what comes next

A wave of guilt straight after saying no is common, particularly if you're used to being the one who says yes. It doesn't mean you did something wrong. It usually passes faster than you'd expect, and most people take a polite no far more calmly than we imagine they will.

Of course, some obligations are real, and some people depend on us. The aim isn't to say no more often for its own sake. It's to make sure that when you say yes, you mean it.
